Choosing a Chip Card (EMV) Solution

EMV changes the transaction process.  Your customers will need to be able to insert their card into the terminal and/or key in their PIN number.  See the EMV Video to see how the sales process will change.

If your point-of sale location makes it easy to turn a terminal around to face the customer, then you don't need a separate PIN Pad.  However, if your point-of-sale area is configured where the terminal is inaccessible to your customer, then a separate Pin Pad will provide a smoother check out experience.

Dial or IP Programming

All of the EMV terminals we offer provide dual communication capabilities.  You can choose Dial and use your analog phone line or IP to use your existing Internet connection.

EMV transactions take longer and add about 15 seconds to a Dial transaction.  IP connections provide a 3 to 4 second response time and provide the best user experience.  IP also reduces the authorization cost on the Elavon network by $0.02 per transaction.  To ease the PCI requirements it is a best practice to add a firewall to segment your terminal from your existing network.

Dial Programming

Choose Dial programming if you have a standard analog  phone line and do not want to segment your network to use an IP (Internet) connection.

If you're opting for Dial we recommend the VeriFone Vx520 as it is not an sensitive to phone line quality issues.

If your terminal rests on a single level counter accessible to customers then you don't need a separate Pin Pad.  For Dial Programming we prefer the VeriFone Vx520.  (We've had a handful of clients who started with the Ingenico and experienced communication errors.  When we swapped with the VeriFone those issues went away.)

If you have a multi-level counter area and need a separate Pin Pad for customer access, choose a bundle.

IP Programming

IP programming uses your Internet connection and provides very quick response times.   To simplify your PCI Security burden, you'll want to segment your terminal from the rest of the network so it sits behinds it's own firewall.  Depending on your Cable | DSL modem, you may just be able to add a firewall.  Sometimes you have to add two.   There are many variations of network configuration.  You should speak with your IT person to determine what's right for you.  Click here to get a sample of network segmentation you can show to your IT person.

If your terminal rests on a single level counter accessible to customers then you don't need a separate Pin Pad.  For IP Programming we really like the Ingenico terminals for ease of use and quick updates.
